Review – The Royals in Netflix, Starring Ishaan Khatter, Bhumi Pednekar, Zeenat Aman

So, Netflix dropped The Royals, and honestly? It’s a mixed bag. You’ve got the glitz, palace politics, forbidden love, and some serious family drama—basically, a recipe that should be binge-worthy. But somewhere between all the gold curtains and candlelit confrontations, the story kind of loses its spark.
The Setup
The show is set in a fictional royal family living in a modern India where being royal doesn’t exactly mean ruling anymore—but it still comes with a ton of expectations. Ishaan Khatter plays the misunderstood prince who just wants to live life on his own terms. Bhumi Pednekar enters the picture as an outsider who challenges the family’s age-old ways.
It sounds exciting—and it is, at times—but it’s also a little too been-there-seen-that.
What We Liked
- Zeenat Aman. Period. The moment she steps in, she brings this old-world charm that’s just magnetic. Graceful, strong, and elegant—she completely owns every scene she’s in. A true queen playing royalty? We love to see it!
- The Look & Feel: The show is absolutely gorgeous. The palaces, the designer outfits, the royal banquets—it’s all super Insta-worthy.
- The Leads: Ishaan brings a natural innocence, and Bhumi is fierce and poised. They both try hard, and it shows.
What Could’ve Been Better
- Storyline Feels Predictable: At times, it feels like you’re watching a fancy daily soap—power games, love triangles, secrets being revealed at just the right (or wrong) moment.
- Too Much Drama, Too Little Depth: There are a lot of characters and subplots, but many of them don’t really go anywhere. You’ll find yourself wanting more—more background, more emotion, more reason to care.
- Pacing is a Bit Off: Some scenes drag on, and others jump too quickly. You might catch yourself scrolling through your phone during a few episodes.
If you’re in the mood for something light, a bit over-the-top, and filled with royal eye-candy, The Royals might just be your cup of chai. It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s definitely a good-looking watch.
And hey, for Zeenat Aman alone—it’s worth checking out a couple of episodes. She’s pure royalty, no debate there.
